Things to Consider Before Buying a Coffee Canister

What makes a good coffee can?

A good coffee can differs from others because of its airtight and insulated closure. The lid is the most important thing in a coffee can, as it ensures that the powder stays fresh for a long time and does not lose any aroma.

Regardless of whether the coffee is already ground, freshly ground with a coffee grinder or filled in whole beans, as soon as the vacuum packaging is opened, the wonderful aroma of the coffee escapes within a very short time.

However, it is not advisable to use the widespread alternatives of clips and other closures for coffee bags, as these are not necessarily suitable for preserving the coffee aroma.

To counteract this problem, it is advisable to purchase a well-insulated and airtight coffee can. Because this actually keeps the coffee fresh and aromatic.

A coffee tin should therefore no longer be missing in any kitchen because it has long been a practical kitchen aid and saves the valuable coffee aroma.

What material is a coffee can made of?

Coffee cans can basically consist of five materials:

  • Metal
  • Plastic
  • Ceramics
  • Glass
  • Wood

Coffee tins made of metal are available in all price ranges and are often available in a wide variety of designs and with numerous paintings.

MaterialProperty
MetalAlmost completely odourless, particularly popular, relatively heavy and robust
PlasticGives off an odour on the coffee beans, make sure it is free of BPA
GlassOften let in air due to poor closure, dishwasher-safe, does not give off odors, lets light through and coffee should be stored in a dark place
WoodStrong odor, robust
Stainless steelBreak resistance, should be coated on the inside food-safe

More exclusive models are made of glass or wood and are intended for people who want good quality even with the smallest objects. Plastic coffee cans are more for the “simple” household, for which the main focus is on the content.

Which coffee cans are available in a retro design?

Many coffee lovers have a weakness for nostalgia.

The manufacturers have reacted to this by bringing particularly attractive storage containers onto the market that know no limits in terms of design and individuality.

What does a coffee can cost?

Coffee cans are available in all price ranges – from the simple plastic can that costs only a few euros to the multifunctional stainless steel coffee can that can be a little more. All in all, we think that these prices are reasonable if you want to enjoy fresh coffee every day without much effort.

Simple coffee tins are available from just six euros. However, if you value a chic design and long-lasting freshness, you shouldn’t skimp on the lid and choose a can with an airtight aroma seal.

Purchase Criteria: Factors to compare and rate coffee cans

In the following, we would like to show you which factors you can use to compare and evaluate coffee cans.

This will make it easier for you to decide whether a particular container is right for you or not.

In summary, these are:

  • Design
  • Dimensions

In the following paragraphs you can read about what the individual purchase criteria are and how you can classify them.

Design

Coffee cans are now available in a wide variety of designs and materials. When buying a container, you can choose between strikingly creative and simply robust models.

If you are looking for a coffee can that will attract everyone’s attention in your kitchen, then we advise you to look around for a container made of metal, as most of these are decorated with great paintings and lettering in a wide variety of designs.

However, if you want a simple can that should still stand out in the kitchen, there are numerous colourful models on the market that you should consider.

If functionality is most important to you, you are well served with a coffee can in a simple design.

Dimensions

Do you prefer to drink your coffee freshly ground every day or do you value speed early in the morning during the week so that you can enjoy every full minute in bed.

Then a large coffee container is ideal for you to prepare coffee powder for the next five days.

How many cups of coffee a day is okay?

The decisive factor is the caffeine content of the drink.

Around 400 mg per day is harmless for an adult.

One cup of filter coffee contains around 80-90 mg of caffeine.

So you can drink 4-5 cups of coffee a day.

You should expect a height of about 15 centimetres if you decide on a smaller model. However, if you plan to make powder for the coming week, a large can of coffee may be more suitable.

This should be at least 20 centimetres high in order to be able to hold enough coffee powder.

Facts worth knowing about coffee storage

What is the best way to store coffee?

Correct storage plays an important role in ensuring that coffee does not lose its valuable taste and special aroma even after opening the pack or after freshly grinding it with a coffee grinder.

Our recommendations:

  • Do not overfill the bean container of your fully automatic coffee machine so as not to expose the beans to unnecessary air and heat.
  • Coffee beans retain the aroma longer than ground coffee. We, therefore, recommend that you always buy beans and grind them yourself if necessary – but only as much as you need.
  • It is best to keep coffee hermetically sealed in a dark and cool room. But be careful: the refrigerator is not suitable for storage because the humidity in the room is too high. In addition, coffee quickly absorbs other smells, which significantly affects the taste. So better to reach for the coffee can if you don’t want to use your coffee beans as odour neutralizers in the refrigerator.
  • On the other hand, you should not transfer ground coffee into other coffee cans. The coffee powder would lose its taste too quickly if it came into contact with the air. You’d better keep the packaging in an airtight can as well.
  • Some coffee beans are now sold in special packaging with an aroma valve. These usually consist of PET, aluminium or paper.  In this case, it is advisable to keep the coffee in the aroma preservation packaging.

Coffee has the longest shelf life if you buy it in the form of beans.
